Dorset Landscapes

Pulpit Rock, Portland

Dorset is a nice place to visit and it is a good place for the landscape photographer. In 2017, I had made three trips to Dorset mainly in the summer months. There are various locations to visit here. The places I had visited on my frequent visits were Corfe Castle, Swanage beach and pier, the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset, Kimmeridge bay and Portland. Here is a small collection of my best photos from the area from long exposures to sunsets however there is alot more to explore and I feel  my favourite destination is Durdle Door in Lulworth and it gives plenty of landscape opportunites during the different seasons.

Perchrock Lighthouse Long Exposures

Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF 24-105mm f/4L lens, 35mm, ISO100, f11, 8 seconds.

I had visited Perch Rock Lighthouse in November which is in New Brighton in Merseyside. I had arrived mid afternoon by train and it was a 10 minute walk from the station to the lighthouse. On arriving at the beach, I setup my DSLR and tripod and I took a couple of test shots from different angles and locations just to see what framing looks good and what framing does not look good.

Yorkshire Coast Landscapes and Seascapes

Flamborough lighthouse at sunset

I had booked a trip to Bempton for two nights during the first week of August mainly to photograph Puffins, Gannets and other seabirds around the RSPB Bempton site and also do some landscape photography which you could read here. However I decided to further check out other places around Bempton and on doing so, I came across a blog post titled “A guide to photographing Flamborough Head“.

I was impressed by the images and I took this as a photography challenge to visit those spots and a few more and photograph them and for this reason, I then planned to stay for an additional 3 nights.

Mountains and Monasteries of Leh

View of Leh from Leh Palace

Leh, Ladakh is one of the most scenic and photogenic places in India. Leh was the ancient capital of Ladakh and now in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. Leh has a lot heritage sites and monasteries and is mainly dominated by Buddhism. The best time to visit Leh would be between April to September. I have myself visited Leh 4 times. It is not only a place where people go for treks and expeditions but also a great place for sightseeing and interacting with locals. One word of advice when visiting Leh is to rest on the day of arrival since Leh is 3500m above sea level. One can get high altitude sickness so it is best to acclimatize slowly at this altitude.

Neutral Density Filters

Comparison of two photos, one shot without an ND filter and one shot with an ND filter.

Neutral density filters come in various strengths or optical densities from blocking 1 stop of light to blocking out 10 or more stops of light passing through the camera lens. Each ND filter is given a notation of 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and so on. The purpose of using ND filter is to achieve motion blur when using slow shutter speeds and are primarily used for shooting landscapes.

How to shoot at long exposures under low light?

This image was shot while trekking in Markha Valley at Kang Yatse II base camp. For this I had used a Canon 6D DSLR and a Tamron 28-300mm lens. A steady tripod is a must to take a shot. For this image, I had used my Mefoto Globetrotter. In addition to the above, a remote shutter release also comes in handy in order to avoid any camera shake. This would normally occur when pressing on a shutter during a long exposure of let’s say 30 seconds. This would ruin the composition.
